As world leaders gather at COP29 to tackle one of our era’s defining challenges, combating climate change, Ethical Power and Infinis are delivering innovative new solutions by transforming former landfill sites into renewable energy hubs.
Using brownfield land for renewable energy generation highlights how corporations can play a key role in harnessing existing, disused land to contribute to Net Zero goals.
One such project is featured in Power Shift: The Renewable Energy Revolution, a new programme by ITN Business that highlights businesses and organisations working at the heart of renewables, driving positive action towards our net zero goals.

Featured in ITN Business’s new programme Power Shift: The Renewable Energy Revolution, we showcase a groundbreaking solution to climate change, repurposing disused land for solar development, and helping accelerate the journey to net zero.
In collaboration with project owner Infinis, we have been working to install solar farms on former landfill sites where the gas extraction is nearing its end.
This innovative approach leverages the existing infrastructure of these sites, namely the grid access points, providing an accessible solution for corporations seeking to procure, or sell, renewable energy.
This is a crucial advantage, as some projects may have to wait until 2030 for a grid connection. This results in a major bottleneck for the deployment of renewables, despite being cheaper, more reliable, and quicker to build.
The choice of using brownfield sites for solar farms presents several compelling benefits, including potentially streamlined planning permissions, a pre-existing grid connection, and typically greater distance from local communities that may be disturbed by construction projects.
These projects come with a number of technical challenges, however, such as shifting topography, near-surface landfill caps, and existing landfill gas infrastructure that must be worked around. Ethical Power specialises in delivering the technical solutions required to make these projects a success and has the resources required to help take corporations looking to utilise their land for solar from design to operation.
